COVID-19 Statement - UPDATE March 31, 2020

If you are feeling worried, confused, or overwhelmed about COVID-19, you are not alone. We are all in this together.


With indefinite school and day-care closures in Alberta, many people working from home, social distancing, and event cancellation, this is a time of increased feelings of loneliness, boredom, fear, anxiety, stress, and even panic. Please know that these feelings are normal reactions to this stressful situation.


Here are some strategies for talking to your children about COVID-19 and coping with this stressful time:

· Remain calm and reassuring. You are a role model for your children. They will react to and follow your reactions to stress.

· Allow your children to talk about their feelings and help to reframe their concerns into the appropriate perspective. Remind them that you, and the adults at their school and in the community, are there to keep them safe and healthy.

· Ensure your children are receiving accurate, factual information about COVID-19.

· Consider monitoring television viewing and social media. Speak to your child about how many stories about COVID-19 on the internet may be inaccurate or rumours.

· Keep a regular sleeping, exercise, and eating schedule as much as possible. This can be reassuring and promote physical health.

The situation is evolving quickly and I will provide updates to clients as needed. At this time, I will continue to provide psychoeducational assessment services. I am following the recommendations of the CDC, Provincial Health Officers in both Alberta and British Columbia, the Government of Canada, and both the College of Alberta Psychologists and the College of Psychologist of BC. The following precautions and strategies have been put in place:

· Screening clients over the phone before scheduling or confirming appointments for any symptoms and travel history.

· Asking clients who may be more at risk of contracting illness (e.g., those with respiratory illnesses, medical conditions, or cognitive disabilities), and those with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing to make alternate arrangements such as rescheduling or offering telephone/video meetings.

· Ensuring high-touch surfaces (including testing materials, writing utensils, tables, door knobs, light switches, phones, etc.) are cleaned with a disinfectant regularly between client appointments.

· Engaging in proper hand washing techniques between sessions with clients.
